There once was an Achilles Tang,
With a striking blue body to hang,
In the reefs it did dwell,
And ate algae quite well,
A majestic fish, yes, quite grand.

Fun fact: The Achilles Tang can grow up to 10 inches long and has a sharp spine near its tail that it can use for defense.

Keeping Achilles Tang in an Aquarium

The Achilles Tang, also known as Acanthurus achilles, is a popular and gorgeous species of saltwater fish that can be kept in an aquarium. However, due to their large size and specific requirements, they are not recommended for beginner aquarists.

These fish require a minimum tank size of 180 gallons (680 liters) and need ample swimming space. They also need a varied diet consisting of algae, meaty foods, and vitamin supplements.

The Achilles Tang is most commonly found in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, so replicating their natural habitat is important. They typically prefer a water temperature between 72 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit (22 and 26 degrees Celsius) and a pH level between 8.1 and 8.4.

When kept in a well-maintained and properly-sized aquarium, the Achilles Tang can live for up to 20 years. These fish are known for their vibrant coloration, including a bright orange patch near the tail and a distinctive black "mask" over their eyes. They are also known for their speed and agility, making them a joy to watch as they zip around the tank.

One unique characteristic of the Achilles Tang is their sharp "scalpel" at the base of their tail. While this may seem like a defensive mechanism, it is actually used to establish dominance over other fish and to establish territory.

Overall, the Achilles Tang is a beautiful and fascinating fish that can be kept in an aquarium with proper care and attention. However, they are best suited for experienced aquarists who are prepared to provide them with the space and resources they need to thrive.
