Keeping Eight Line Wrasse in an Aquarium
The Eight Line Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus octotaenia) is a colorful and active fish that can make a great addition to a reef or community aquarium. Here are some tips for keeping this fish happy and healthy:
Tank Setup
The Eight Line Wrasse is a relatively small fish, reaching a maximum size of about 3 inches. However, it is active and likes to swim, so a tank with plenty of open space is ideal. A 30-gallon tank or larger should be sufficient for one or two of these fish.
The Eight Line Wrasse is a reef-safe fish, meaning it won't harm corals or other invertebrates. However, it may eat small crustaceans like shrimp or crabs, so be cautious if you have these in your tank.
Diet
The Eight Line Wrasse is an omnivore, meaning it eats both meaty and plant-based foods. In the wild, it feeds on small crustaceans, worms, and algae. In the aquarium, it can be fed a varied diet of frozen or live foods, such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and chopped seafood. It may also graze on algae growing in the tank.
Behavior
The Eight Line Wrasse is an active and curious fish that likes to explore its surroundings. It may occasionally hide in rockwork or other hiding places, but it is generally out in the open swimming around. It can be kept with other peaceful fish, but may become aggressive towards other wrasses or fish with similar body shapes.
Coolest Stuff
- The Eight Line Wrasse gets its name from the eight horizontal lines that run along its body.
- This fish can change color depending on its mood or surroundings. It may appear more brightly colored when it is excited or during mating displays.
- The Eight Line Wrasse is known for its jumping ability, so be sure to have a tight-fitting lid on your tank to prevent it from escaping.
