There once was a Sleeper Banded Goby,
A fish that was quite the hobby,
With its stripes of black and white,
And its sleep during the night,
This fish will make your tank look so snobby.

But don't let its lazy name fool you,
For this fish is quite the cool crew,
It can change its color with ease,
And hide in the reef with such tease,
Amblygobius phalaena is a fish you will pursue.

Keeping Sleeper Banded Goby in an Aquarium

Tank Requirements

  • The Sleeper Banded Goby is a relatively small fish, reaching a maximum size of around 4 inches.
  • A tank size of at least 30 gallons is recommended.
  • The tank should have plenty of hiding places, such as rocks and caves, as well as open swimming areas.
  • The water temperature should be between 72-78°F, with a pH of 8.1-8.4 and a salinity of 1.020-1.025.

Diet

  • They will also sift through the sand for small crustaceans and other invertebrates.
  • It is important to feed them small, frequent meals throughout the day rather than one large feeding.

Behavior

  • The Sleeper Banded Goby is a peaceful fish that can be kept with other non-aggressive fish.
  • They are known for their interesting behavior of burrowing and sifting through the sand for food.
  • They may also form a symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp, where the goby acts as a lookout while the shrimp digs and maintains their burrow.

Coolest Stuff

  • The Sleeper Banded Goby is known for its unique coloration, with alternating bands of white and brown or black.
  • They are also known for their interesting behavior of burrowing and sifting through the sand for food.
