Whose colors are quite the penny,
Its shade ranges wide,
From green to brown side,
And its antics are quite the many.

With its charming and playful guise,
It swims and dances before our eyes,
Hops and skips in the sand,
And hides in rocks with its quick hand,
This tiny fish is quite the prize.

In aquariums, it's a delight,
Adding color to a plain sight,
A peaceful fish it may be,
But not with its own company,
It'll chase away its own blenny might.

So if you want a blenny that's cool,
Bicolor's the one to rule,
With its bright color and liveliness,
You'll surely love its cleverness,
This fish is the perfect jewel!

Keeping Bicolor Blenny in an Aquarium

Common Name: Bicolor Blenny

The Bicolor Blenny (Ecsenius bicolor) is a small, colorful fish that is popular among aquarists due to its easy care and interesting behavior. Here are some things to consider when keeping Bicolor Blenny in an aquarium:

Tank Size and Setup

Bicolor Blennies are relatively small, reaching a maximum size of 2.5 inches, and can be kept in a tank as small as 10 gallons. However, it is recommended to keep them in a tank no smaller than 20 gallons to provide adequate swimming space.

Bicolor Blennies like to perch on rocks and corals, so creating a reef-like setup with plenty of hiding spots is ideal. Live rock and live sand are also recommended for the best possible habitat. Ensure that the tank is well-filtered and has consistent water parameters to promote overall health and vitality.

Feeding and Diet

Bicolor Blennies are omnivorous and will eat a variety of foods in the aquarium. They enjoy grazing on algae, so a well-established algae source within the tank is beneficial. Additionally, they should be fed a varied diet of frozen or dried foods, including brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and high-quality flakes.

Behavior and Compatibility

In the wild, Bicolor Blennies are found in pairs or small groups, so they are social and thrive when kept with other fish of similar size and temperament. They are known for their quirky behaviors, such as perching on rocks with their heads facing downwards to keep watch on their territory. They are generally peaceful, but it is important to avoid keeping them with larger, aggressive fish that may bully or eat them.

Coolest Stuff

  • The Bicolor Blenny is also known as the Two-colored Blenny because of its distinctive coloring: a bright blue top half and a white bottom half.
  • They are excellent jumpers, so ensure that the aquarium has a secure lid or mesh cover.
  • Bicolor Blennies are known to mimic other species, such as cleaning gobies, by making similar movements and patterns to trick fish into thinking that they are also cleaners.
  • They have incredibly sharp, pointy teeth that are used to graze on algae and other small invertebrates.
