Keeping Sleeper Banded Goby (Amblygobius phalaena) in an Aquarium

The Sleeper Banded Goby, also known as the Brownbarred Goby, is a popular fish among aquarists due to its unique appearance and interesting behavior. Here are some things to consider when keeping them in an aquarium:

Tank Size and Setup

Sleeper Banded Gobies are relatively small fish, growing up to 3 inches in length. They are peaceful and can be kept in a community tank with other non-aggressive species. A tank size of at least 30 gallons is recommended to provide enough swimming space and hiding spots.

They prefer a sandy substrate and will often burrow and sift through the sand for food. Live rock and coral can also be added to the tank to provide additional hiding places.

Water Conditions

Sleeper Banded Gobies are hardy fish and can tolerate a range of water conditions. They prefer a pH between 8.1-8.4 and a temperature range of 72-78°F. A salinity level of 1.020-1.025 is ideal.

Diet

Sleeper Banded Gobies are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods in the aquarium. They will often graze on algae and other small organisms in the sand. They can also be fed a diet of frozen or live brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other small meaty foods.

Behavior

Sleeper Banded Gobies are known for their interesting behavior of burrowing and sifting through the sand. They will often form a symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp, where the shrimp will create a burrow and the goby will act as a lookout for predators. They are generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish.

Coolest Stuff

  • Sleeper Banded Gobies have the ability to change their coloration to blend in with their surroundings.
  • They are known to form monogamous pairs and will often mate for life.
  • Sleeper Banded Gobies are often used in reef tanks as they will eat small pests and algae.
